Most office jobs don’t require much in the way of presentable clothing in comparison to creative jobs – but regardless every man should own the perfect basic white shirt. I have been to several press events with men trying to work a basic white shirt, the only time I’ve ever seen a perfect white shirt was at a book signing where Niall Ferguson was jacket-less with a white crisp shirt without a tie and 1button undone.
It takes a certain pedigree to wear a white shirt with style, an unbuttoned white shit often suggests an open mind and an easy going attitude perfect for casual weekends too.
Choosing a perfect white shirt isn’t as easy as you may think. Too cheap you may look like a bored office worker; too loose you wont get away with it, unless you’re wearing a cravat and smoking a pipe (which very few men can pull off). The modern man has to contend with the “slim-fit” cut from Paul Smith to Ralph Lauren although periods of binging on your favourite foods may require a more generous cut.
You want to look for something that silhouettes your body but doesn’t hug it too tight. You can democratically button your sleeves for your office but don’t be afraid to roll them up for a casual meet with friends. Although invest in a french cuff and a nice pair of cufflinks. It’s worth it for the moment when you shoot the cuffs on those starched white sleeves. This “basic” look is actually far from basic if worn correctly.
